Billy Higgins was a renowned jazz drummer known for his versatile and expressive style. Born in 1936 in Los Angeles, he worked with a wide range of jazz greats, including Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, and Thelonious Monk. His drumming was pivotal in both hard bop and free jazz, helping to shape the sound of the 1960s and beyond.
Higgins recorded with one of my saxophonist heros, Dexter Gordon & I loved his focus on the ride cymbal on those recordings. Often, while performing with my own jazz group, when I'd needed the drummer to simplify what he was doing, I'd only have to turn around to the drummer & just say "Higgins" & like magic, the whole band would be lifted musically to a new level.
