My absolute tenor saxophone hero, Johnny Griffin, was a master of bebop and hard bop, renowned for his lightning-fast lines and powerful sound. Born in 1928 in Chicago, he played with jazz greats like Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, and Max Roach. Griffin's recordings from the 1950s and '60s showcase his technical brilliance and expressive improvisation, solidifying his place as one of the most influential saxophonists in jazz history.
